Q

Two song-related questions: What do you generally compose first--lyrics or music? How much of your lyrics come from personal experience and how much from the general human experience?

Ryanhood responded on 11/30/2011
A

When I (Ryan) write, I almost always start with the music. Cameron often writes lyrics first. We generally write lyrics with a very personal connection. I think that it's important for there to be a personal connection to make the song relatable

Q

I have two two-part questions: First, what is your favorite part of recording an album? Least favorite part? Second, what is your favorite part of touring? Least favorite part?

Ryanhood responded on 11/19/2011
A

Favorite part of recording an album is getting to listen to the playback a song you wrote and experience it the way an audience member gets to... getting to step outside of the song and listen to it instead of performing it. Least favorite part is when you reach the finish line with a song that you failed to get right, often due to time or money constraints, or perhaps you didn't spend enough time working out the kinks in the arrangement, and so you're stuck with a permanent version of something that's not quite there. Favorite part of touring is seeing people smiling, genuinely happy to see us in their town, and excited to hear us play our songs. That's quite a wonderful gift to receive. Least favorite part is getting overly concerned with what others think of us, paying too much attention to their reactions and straying away from just being ourselves and making art that we enjoy.

Q

When do plan on playing Tucson next? What about a quick trip down to Bisbee to christen our revamped Royale Theater?

Ryanhood responded on 11/14/2011
A

A show at the Royale Theater would be fun, but we'd need a local promoter to do a lot of work to help us fill that room up. Feel free to connect us with an interested promoter! As far as Tucson, probably another show in March/April.

Q

Do you have fun on tour?

Ryanhood responded on 11/10/2011
A

of course!

Q

What ever happened to being on Ellen?

Ryanhood responded on 11/05/2011
A

her people contacted us just as the season was wrapping filming. unfortunately they couldn't fit us in before the season ended, and when we reached out to them in the fall for the upcoming season, her staff was completely new and had no idea who we were. :-(

Q

What is your favorite song to play? And what is your favorite song (from Ryanhood) to listen to?

Ryanhood responded on 11/05/2011
A

usually something new and exciting... meaning in me is a fun one live. current fav's from the new record to listen to are didn't put anything into your place, meaning in me, and always love you, because of the emotional impact of each one.

Q

So, were you both born awesome? Or did you become that way over years of training?

Ryanhood responded on 11/05/2011
A

we trained in secret for years

Q

Who is your favourite Irishman and who is the most handsome irishman you know?

Ryanhood responded on 06/01/2011
A

John'O... er, Bono

Q

Ryan, what made you pick up the mandolin?

Ryanhood responded on 06/01/2011
A

I am a huge Chris Thile fan (mandolinist of Nickel Creek and now Punch Brothers), so I had been tinkering on them for a while, but didn't own a quality instrument. Our bassist Chris gave me one for my birthday a few years ago, and that's when it started! I'm in China right now, and I just bought a great four string instrument called a Liuqin, so look out for that soon too :-)
